What is Capstone?

I am Jaden Buist and this is a blog documenting the process through my Senior Year Capstone course. At first, the Capstone seemed like just another project and quite frankly, I was less than excited to start this class. The more I learn about it, it becomes clearer that this is more than just another assignment. It is an opportunity for me to put together all I have been learning for the past two years into something I am proud of.

So, what is Capstone?

In the syllabus of the class, the course description said:

This course is part 1 of a 2-course sequence that challenges senior students to develop and produce a significant visual communication project that culminates the skills, knowledge, and understanding acquired throughout the program. The focus of part 1 is project development including, ideation, research, and prototyping.

Now that we have defined it a little bit, it sounds a little overwhelming, right? Picking a subject to develop over 2 courses is a big task and needs to be exciting. However, the subject of the Capstone doesn’t have to be a brand new innovative idea. The overall project has to focus on either depth or breadth. A project focused on depth would be more complex within a small number of products. A project with a focus on breadth within several different products.

The heart of the Capstone experience is defining and solving design problems within a larger scope or degree of complexity.

If you look back into my blog, you will see I have written about some of my projects in the past and the learning I have done over the last few years. While in school, I have learned so much about design and process. So, what better way to show that off than a comprehensive project? This is an exciting opportunity where I get to bring it all together into something (hopefully) amazing. Over the next few months, I will be updating this blog to document the process and reflect on it. Let’s do this!
